I have an innate desire to continually help people, to care for them, to be there for them. After 30 years of nursing in a vast number of areas, including mental health services, I can assure you that I have experienced the trials and tribulations of caring, over caring, burn out and compassion fatigue. A lot of successes too.

 

I have learnt to put boundaries around my work and personal life. I walk the walk and talk the talk.

One of the most useful tools for surviving in a gruelling and sometimes thankless workforce that continued to ask more and more from me were my professional supervision sessions. Whether the topic during the supervision session was about the system I worked in, the management I worked for, the requirements and demands of the organisation I was able to reflect on best practice, validate my actions and roles in various situations.

 

I found that meeting regularly, usually monthly, with my professional supervisor was above and beyond helpful. I know that during these sessions I was able to discuss work issues, ethics, areas of professional development that were all useful in getting me through dealing with crisis, challenging events and support others also.

Professional supervision is completely confidential so I was safe to say all that I needed to process a work issue, incident or where to from here regarding career development.

 

My supervisor also encouraged me to highlight all the things I was doing well. For example, keeping the person I was caring for at the centre of the issue, encouraging me to be a valuable employee and fully engaged in my work.

Now, as a supervisor myself, I offer you a wealth of experience and tools to help you manage career development and process work concerns.
